The who, what, where, when and why

MusaweNkosi Ministries was set up over 20 years ago by missionaries Gavin and Elaine. It became clear there was a vital need for a children's home  in the rural township of Ntwezi, near Empangeni. At this time they found that the life expectancy in this area was just 38 years, 1/4 of the children in school were orphans and every home was affected by HIV/AIDS.

There were lots of additional factors too - poverty, no education, abuse of women and children, no food, substance abuse and illness. Yet, God is a God of the impossible and MusaweNkosi – which means God’s grace, was started in 2001. The goals were to identify orphans; support guardians; support schools and start a feeding program. Over it all, the aim was to show God’s loving kindness and point to the Lord Jesus Christ.

MusaweNkosi Children's Home

There are currently 38 children living at
MusaweNkosi Children's home full time, aged between 6-18, 9 of which are special needs.

For these children, the home is so much more than a place to sleep – it is security, safety and love. A world apart from the homes they have come from where violence, homicide and physical/sexual abuse is the norm.

Enseleni Feeding Scheme

In addition the children's home they also run a feeding scheme in another rural area called Enseleni. Similarly, children are identified who are behind at school and whose home from impoverished homes. There are currently around 30 children who attend the feeding scheme - they are provided with a meal after school everyday (it's likely that for some this is the only meal they eat all day) and they are also supported with their school work. The workers there also teach them Bible stories and memory verses.

You can find out more about their other projects here >>

Whilst I'm here I'll be mainly helping at the 'site' (children's home) with homework, games, bible stories etc as well as shopping for both the home and feeding scheme.
